OT - anyone still use mike reflectors?

I'm rearranging some stuff at home, uncovered a Grampian parabolic microphone reflector. An ebay search hasn't found anything. Are they completely redundant now with highly directional microphones?

I thought a parabolic reflector was a PART of a highly directional (and sensitive) microphone.

No they're not redundant. Bird-song recordists use them. Being a cheap-skate I made mine from the parabolic reflector behind a radiant heater which Maplin were selling off for £4. Probably not as good as the £200-£350 transparent plastic types.

I polished an old Amstrad (non-mesh) satellite dish; good for cooking sausages on a sunny day!
