Now at £18200.
Is it selling as a really nice, but essentially it's an indulgence, lathe or on it's rarity?
...and the high bidder has one whole feedback point, been on ebay for a year....
Peter
Given the price it is obviously quite an indulgence, but the value is probably down the the rarity of the item. I would think that if you were wanting to buy something like this you might have to wait years for one to come onto the market. Probably, as in this case, waiting for an owner to die as people who have these things don't tend to part with them.
It is a little sad that it seems likely it will be sold to America. We don't seem to attach much value, as a nation, to our industrial heritage.

In this particular case, not true. The Science Museum already possesses a considerable range of ornamental turning equipment in their Hand & Machine Tools collection. Ben Russell, Curator, Mechanical Engineering and Manufacture at the Science Museum is aware of this sale.

At least one thing is for sure, wherever this item ends up whoever has just paid £26,100 for it is certain to treat it with love and care -I do hope they use it though, it would be a shame to see as a museum piece.

Kevin,
I agree some museums are dry-as-dust places where exhibits gather cobwebs and yawns, but they're not all like that.
Surely it is better if an item is demonstrated to the public in a museum, that would allow the many to enjoy it, rather than be locked away in a rich man's vault, to be enjoyed only by him and his small circle of friends?
My particular enthusiasm is for internal combustion stationary engines, and we have two world class museums in this country devoted to them,
I would far rather see a heritage engineering item in a museum of this sort, rather than hidden in the shed of someone (probably overseas) who is far richer than I can ever hope to be, and who will make damn sure no ragged trousered oik like myself will ever see it.
