Sorry, I pasted a section from the Heidenhain service manual, forgetting I cant do this on the group.

It says, Test the 12v supply: Pins 23/24 of the VDU socket on rear of TNC w.r.t Pins 21/22

My only guess was "Wired right through" but doubt that is right. Bob

For some reason, the picture _didn't_ get stripped off, so I saw it anyway!! (didn't even think about that bit until your comment).

My interpretation was that pins 23 and 24 are wired together and at one end of the 12V supply, 21 and 22 are wired together and at the other end of the supply.

so it'd be " check that pins 23&24 are at 12V with respect to pins 21&22"

Is that a reasonable interpretation?

Thanks Mark Sounds reasonable to me, Just wish I knew what the next bit means in English !!!

" check that pins 23&24 are at 12V with respect to pins 21&22"

Does one connect a volt meter across both sets of pins and pray you get 12v, or is it on one set of pins to earth, and the same again on the other set to see if both have 12v ?

I doubt however, the power supply is my problem, as the monitor tube "glows" orange in the back end of the tube, the heater part i Guess, so it tells me power is there.

Studying the Heidenhain service manual points to a possible problem with the CLP processor board if power supply ok, or dodgy connections to the VDU socket, as suggested by another poster.

Heidenhain would charge £3000 for a service exchange unit, and want £1250 to repair a TNC 151, and they state no cosmetic work and no PCB's are renewed. Annoyingly, they tell you what your symptoms are, and state its a common fault with systems that are aging, as this controller is. This is a point for other owners of machines with this controller on to bear in mind.

Tempting to go for the one on Ebay, but my German/Austrian vocabulary is zero, although he seems to spreckon the UK lingo on email. Another offer locally is half Heidenhains price, but again, big money if your not 100% about the goods or service you get. Bob

I was wondering if any of the chips were socketed but looking at your previous pics it doesn't look like it, although all the shots seemed slightly out of focus. A common problem on older boards with solder coated contacts is oxides building up and affecting the signals and removing and replacing the chips wipes the contacts surfaces and can get things going again. I saved a local glass blower some hundreds of pounds knowing that by doing that process on one of her Cal Controls temperature controllers. Those temp controllers have guts that are removable from the case that fits in the instrument panel and they can be easily prised out if you know about it, the internal contacts only being solder coated suffer the problem. A few minutes making an ali pry bar and the guts could be popped out and once replaced her problem of thermocouple failure went away. I left her with the pry bar as she had a couple more of the same controllers on other items.

I presume a search of the internet hasn't turned up a common fault list to work from. Trying to think of other items that may afflict an older board, any signs of dry joints or heat effected areas.

A mate saved the CNC guy at a company I know some a few thousand £ by repairing a BP machining centre, it only required a single RS 232 driver IIRC being replaced but BP or their reps wanted thousands for the board, still stopped the machine being used for any new parts till fixed.

Strictly speaking, you connect the voltmeter across pins 23 and 21 and check the voltage. Then you connect the voltmeter across pins 24 and 22, and do the same. Pins 23 and 24 may or may not be be connected to each other.

As an end to the story, faulty Heidenhain TNC 151 cnc controller, I found a company in Birmingham who repaired it in 4 days, returned item to me, then sent a very favourably priced invoice, to the point I will send him a faulty TNC 145 to be repaired. I will supply this companies contact name to anyone who needs it, although I have no connection other than have used him. Job done bob
