Wigglers

A simple question?! - I just purchased a Wiggler Centre Finder set from Chronos. And I have realised (on trying to use it) that I cannot understand how I should be using it... Anyone point me a simple "howto" guide for centre and edge finders (preferably with pictures?)

Malcolm,

If it's the imperial set, measure the drum type which is supposed to be .250". On mine it is a good bit less than 0.25" and is more than likely 6mm diameter. I found this out the hard way :-)

And somewhere, recently, there was a good series of messages about how to use the edge finders which I'll try and find.

Jim.

I've made a very short video showing a wiggler to find the edge of a piece of stock in the mini mill on the Y axis -

Simply wind the axis until the wiggler flies away, that's the contact point with the edge of the ball or disc. You have to continue winding the workpiece towards the vertical centre of the wiggler for a further distance which is equal to the radius of the wiggler. Note the caveats elsewhere in the thread that the diameter printed on the packet may not be the real diameter :-(

As did I, 0.23495" for the ball contact 0.25", even halving the error to give the radius it's still 7.5 thou out. Still kicking myself as it took me a while to work out why the results were not as expected...

The 0.1" disc contact comes out at 0.1013" which is sufficiently close I wouldn't have suspected any error, although this has now become detached from the holding ball that sits in the chuck (as have most of the others).
