PADs in the news

And probably "self-medicated" for pain prior to the injury in the first place.

Is there such a thing as "NUI"?

Is it an unusual chainsaw? I thought "use your brain and be careful (etc.) was a standard feature of such equipment!

What did you do, turn one of the shifter kart engine guys loose on the cylinder porting?

heheheheh, back when I used to build motox/kart motors I did a mega port job on a rotax 340 twin. I *thought* it was going to be used in a snow mobile. Wrong, the guy used it with my custom pipes for his competition chainsaw used at Paul Bunyon days in Brainerd!

It's a 60s model Homelite that is just about the right size to cut cars in half (the bar is somewhere around 2-2.5 feet long). Weighs at least

30 lbs, has zero safety features (you let off the trigger and set it on the ground and it slowly dances in a circle with the chain "just a whirrin"). Still has blood stains on it from where somebody borrowed it from my dad and attempted to use it to trim branches above their head. He lost a leg.

Helped some friends clear some land once, bunch of guys with newer saws. Fired up ol' Faithful and it sounded like a musclecar surrounded by Hondas with fartcans.

I love it.

Sure they would, it happens all the time. You shouldn't disable any safety features, but some people do it because they find them inconvenient. In my

31 years in the construction trade, I've seen all kinds of unsafe practices.

I can literally watch that happen as I type this. They're putting a roof on the house across the street. The guy just whacks a line of shingles with the nail gun, and what I assume is recoil bounces it back into the air for the next stroke. He's doing almost 2 nails a second.

I'l bet you have to keep manualy pumping lube onto the chain too.

I use a modern Stihl saw, with auto oiler, chain brake, anti kickback chain design... That chain brake is a nusance, and sometimes the saw demands a rest. My cousin, and wood cutting buddy, uses two cheaper saws. He's mot much for higher education, but he has impressive practical knowledge. One day he was cussing at his chain saw, and I told him he had put the chain on backwards. But the fun part is using a really old log splitter. I get over half our home heating from burning self cut firewood, and keep the house warmer than most folks do.

having the government exempt training for chainsaws should be a good thing, right?

I'd buy one for my senator :)

Of course, and the reason they typically cite? Compliance would be too cumbersome to continue with existing and neccessary operations. But what about the "for profit" operations? Comply or face closure. Or as it often happens, comply AND face closure...

Next time you see your represenative, ask them about how much gas tax they pay while in Wash DC...

I get a large part of my home heat FREE from a super insulated passive solar design. No wood to cut, split, and store. This past week with daytime temperatures in the teens but bright sun our furnace doesn't run all day.
