Update to my rocket "FAQ" / palm problems

BackupBuddy. It backs up everything and lets you put it back. Does what HotSync should have been doing all along. Also, HotSync your palm every time you get on your desktop machine. Make it a habit.

Just like windows, or linux, you need to either write your own scripts (linux like) or buy a total backup solution from a thrid party (windows like) to prevent this from happening. Some freeware does exist. google palm backup software and it won't happen anymore.

Keep everything you can't afford to lose on an SD card. End of problem.

I'll look into this one.

Already do that. Problem is more often than not, it fails. In this case, I'd done a good hot sync Saturday morning. Was out of town over the weekend. GOt home 'dog tired', ate dinner, and went to bed. I even forgot to take my evening pills (ironically, the reminder alarm to do so is on the PDA...). Got up this AM, read my email, and went to hotsync the PDA and it was dead.

I'll second that. BackupBuddy is the single most important piece of software I have that has anything to do with my Palm. I've upgraded from the IIIx to the M-500 and replaced the M-500 with another one under warranty. Zero problems when I used BackupBuddy to restore everything. Even if you do toast something, there is a copy of the old file in case you made an error. Also, if you happen to have a memory card, BackupBuddy VFS will handle backing up to the card as well. I don't use that feature as the existing system is good enough. Of course BackupBuddy will only look after what is on the Palm. Desktop applications are another matter. BTW,

is the url for BackupBuddy.

It also sounds like you have some chronic sync. problem. There are lots of good Palm newsgroups out there. I haven't been on one in ages so I can't point you there.

Good luck!

How do I transfer things like my calendar, contact lists, memos, todos, etc to the card? The only program that comes with the Zire that seems to allow use of the card is the photo app.

I guess it depends on the version of Palm OS you use but I copy stuff to and from the card using the copy function. However, I see your point I think. I can't actually "see" the data you mention listed on the "handheld" when I go to the copy function. If BackupBuddy doesn't suit your needs, there must be another app out there for safe copy and backup. I do think that Palm OS should have made it easier on us all though. It is easy to get frustrated with this stuff.
