I am helping my son in a science project and have a Revell 1/350th Titanic hull. I notices the overlapping hull plates at least appear to a laymen to be hugely out of scale. Were the overlapping hull plates really that thick?

You are right, the plate thickness on the Titanic plastic models are way out of scale. Even on a very large model, say 1/96 scale, the plate thickness would be subtle, maybe .010 or so. To give you an example, when we make up hulls in large scale we usually tape and just apply a few extra coats of primer to represent hull plating, if it is done at all. Other guys use very thin aluminum strips.
Hope this helps
