what a "bort" number is? I can't seem to find an online definition...

If's from Russian. They use the term "bortovyy nomer" (side number) for their tanks and aircraft, and NATO intelligence just chopped that down to "bort number" when referring to tanks and aircraft.

The Arabs are the only ones so far who had to "color code" their markings so the illiterates could tell them apart. Iraq and Syria are particularly big on this.
