ran out of rlm 65 in the midst of a big fuselage and there ain't a hobby store within 3 hours of here. and it's sunday night. well any stort in a porm... i bought 5 of the 57 cent apple barrel brand acrylic paints at squall mart and tired mixing my own with an eyedropper and some 99% isopropyl alcohol. it worked! the fuselage matches the wings and it looks great. for less than 3 bucks i didn't have to wait for mail order. so i mixed up a whole model master bottle full and didn't put a real dent in the new bottles. neccessity really is a mother. don't be afraid to try stuff, if i can do it.....

I've got a whole pile of bottles of those paints I mixed to match Luftwaffe colors.

i'm guess you are asking which colors i used to mix? navy blue, black, apple green, red apple and yellow, antique white. i did a lot of adjusting, so i could have gotten it down to 4, maybe. i tried rlm 70 for kicks and it was easier, or i got better. i think for about $20, i will have the whole range of rlm and raf colors. i've spent that on one kit's paint and used most of it. this will make a LOT. i printed out the 3 rlm chart pages years ago and they match up to model master really well, so they are my template.
Where do you guys get 99% isopropyl alcohol? The strongest I can find is
70%. Anyway, just a FWIW...When I use the 70% alcohol with Delta Ceramcoat it ends up dry and about like 400 grit (really). I also tried it with Liquitex airbrush medium, which stays visibly wetter, and that feels like maybe 800. This is with a Paasche VL, #5 tip and 13 psi, bearing in mind my airbrush skills aren't the greatest. It won't stick to bare styrene, but seems to grab onto Krylon primer well enough. I've thought about mixing/ thinning it with Future just for S&G to see what happens.-- Message posted using
