FAA inventory

Ah. I suppose the large kangaroo in the middle of the roundel should have tipped me off. I had assumed the book only had FAA squadrons and would have stopped coverage when they became part of an independent force.

Its an easy mistake to make Gary, IIRC during WW2 most Commonwealth and some other (e.g. Dutch, Belgian and Polish) countries used squadron numbers in the RAF or RN sequence, many of these squadrons served with distinction and the squadron numbers and traditions were carried on post-WW2, even when their own national air forces reformed.

I doubt many Polish airmen serving with the Western powers got to serve with their reformed military but the Dutch and Canadians do seem to have kept the squadron numbering systems.

Thanks for that Bill, I momentarily forgot that Poland was behind the "Iron Curtain" after the end of the war, never the less as you say, it is true of Dutch, Canadian and Norwegian AF numbering systems, and I think its a fantastic way to honour those who gave their all, so that we enjoy our freedom today.

Interesting aside: During the Second World War, RCAF units serving in Europe and the Far East were allotted the RAF squadron number block 400-449 and used them all. (RAAF and RNZAF shared the other 400 numbers (450-499), I believe). Post-war, the RCAF and RAAF kept the numbers and "patriated" them, as pointed out. The RCAF needed a new squadron so it became 450 Squadron RCAF. There was then the situation of having 450 Sqn RCAF and 450 Sqn RAAF co-existing on the same planet. Apparently, they got along very well and had an unofficial "affiliation".
