Hawker Typhoon IIb

Have a look at this article. Is this a "what-if", or has the author been mistaken?

The Typhoon II became the Tempest. There was never a Centaurus-engined Typhoon in squadron service. There *was* a Centaurus-engined Tempest, which incidentally was designated "Tempest II". Oh... and the serial JN867 belongs to a Tempest V.

Did the modeller intend to build a Tempest II? Or did he simply follow the Superczynski Way? "Build what *you* want, the way that *you* want to."

Whatever... it's a very nice model!

This is a "What If" scenario, not quite on a par with the Black Hawk squadron's use of the Grumman F5F, but close! :-)

I'd call it a "what-if". Very nicely done, too.

nodnodnod It's just that there is no mention of "what-if" in the article.

I tell you what would be interesting as a "what-if". A Hawker Tornado in squadron service. The Tornado was the forerunner of the Typhoon and was sort of a cross between a Hurricane and a Typhoon.

A small correction, if I may, The Tornado and Typhoon were the Hawker prototypes N and R, N for the Napier Sabre engined Typhoon and R for the Rolls Royce Vulcan engined Tornado. They were pretty close to being twins with the same wing and tail, and only smaller fuselage changes. Tornado flew first with radiator like the Hurricane, but only for about 1 month, and then had the big scoop so well known on Typhoons and Tempests. Tempest by the way was supposed to be the Typhoon Mk II with the new thinner wing.

That sounds right. I posted that without checking my references. I do remember that the original Tornado appeared to have the wings, rear fuselage and tail unit of a Typhoon, with the nose, cockpit area and belly radiator of a Hurricane. I reckon that would make an interesting project.
