How do you Mask Off Windows for Painting

Can you please give some ideas how to properly Mask Off Aircraft Windows and then prep for painting. I don't want to get any paint on them. I'm using the Model Master Enamel paint #'s RLM 71-&- 62

I have only Masked Off Canopies for a few Fighter Planes before this. I have Never Done regular "Windows" inside the Fuselage before this. I am almost ready to put the Camo Colors on my Ju-52 the interior is Done and the sides have been glued together and all of the edges lightly sanded.

So the Painting is pretty much next. That's where i'm afraid i'll screw up.

thanks very nuch

I have used several different methods:

You can use a liquid masking agent, like the one sold by Microscale. You can use frisket film. You can use Bare Metal Foil. Or, you can cover the windows with poster putty, but be careful of bleed under if you don't burnish it down correctly.

Which do I prefer? I'll be wishy-washy and say, "It depends."

You can use pva glue ( white glue) as a mask ,just apply with a tooth pick ,let it dry and use a toothpick to remove it after you painted.

Thanx kevin (bluey)......thats the most sensible(and cost effective) advice I have had yet, Damien.

=== As of recent, I have been using Bare Metal Foil to mask off my canopies and a/c windows. If you go that way buy the plain Chrome BMF. I find this one is rather flexible and will stretch, not to mention that it goes on well on moderately curved surfaces. When applied, it really shows where to make your cuts. To clean off any BMF glue/adhesive residue, use denatured alcohol dabbed on a cotton swab (that's a Q-Tip for you guys on the left coast).

Cheers, now go build something,

Since I ALWAYS dip my canopies in Future, I don't dare use alcohol to remove the BMF residue. Instead I use Goo-Gone on a Q-tip and the gunk comes right off with no damage to the Future. I also use acrylic paints which aren't affected by the Goo-Gone. If you use enamels, be very careful. You may have to consider alternatives and if you aren't using Future, the alcohol may be the way to go.

I'm very happy with masking with "Cheap Chocolate Foil". For a tutorial, go here:

I have found the PERFECT way to seperate the foil from it's backing. I use an iron, pressed on the aluminum side for just a few moments. This warms up the waxy adhesive just enough that the two sheets litteraly seperate, no peeling necessary. After cooling, the adhesive will regain it's tackiness.

Must credit Rich Cox ;-) But I give it to Cyborg 4000 for free, he's good people, and has earned it this year.

BTW, I have noticed that finding candy bars that still use te foil wrapping is beoming more difficult. But when I do, my waist line takes a real hit.

After trying to use bare metal foil, but having problems with residue for years, I have switched over to Tamiya masking tape. Apply, cut, paint, peel off.

Well , thank so you very much for your kind words I don't know what else to say.

OHHH - Can you use the "foil" from Gum Wrappers. You can find a lot of them that still seem to have the paper backing.

Yessss , I seem to consume the contents of the wrapper each time I find a Candy Bar. Doesn't seem to matter if it has the "foil" on it or not. ........ LOL

Ah, the good old days! My last chocolate bar was on May 29, 1975 and it was a Three Musketeers. I try not to look at the candy sections in stores.
