Is the Tamiya kit, the D-520 the same type as my grandfathers destroyer, the USS Strong? She was sunk in 1943 and I don't know if the Fletcher class was modified during its run.

That appears to be a round bridge Fletcher so the Tamiya kit will work. You might need to do some mods but it doesn't look major.
