Just the FACs please

I have a question about FAC operations in Vietnam. When a USMC got a radio call for help, could he vector in aircraft from all services, or were only USN/USMC aircraft at his disposal? Also, did Army ground troops have the capability to contact any FAC in the sky regardless of what service was flying them? ie. could Army soldiers call up a USMC FAC? I'm just wondering how well-coordinated the ground/air was, or if it was service-specific.

Leaving aside the issue of coordination, FAC and CAS missions were most certainly not service-specific. The USAF provided the vast majority of both and I don't think there were many USAF infantry units engaged in ground combat operations...... ;-p

I recall reading somewhere -- long ago and far away, so take it with a grain of sodium chloride -- that while FACs were not "service specific", Marine ground units tended to be supported *mainly* by Marine and/or Navy Aviation units and Army ground units tended to be supported

*mainly* by Army Aviation and USAF units. This seemed to be less true as the war progressed and missions tended to overlap or get just plain confused as to who needed what, when and where...

Thank you for your answers. I was mainly asking in the context of inter-service rivalry and about USMC FACs being able to call in strikes from services other than the USN/USMC, and your answers were what I was after. These are the types of questions that modeling an USMC OV-10 Bronco generate! I guess I misunderstood about the long and proud history of the USAF infantry Al ;-)

try OV-10Bronco.net for a good start on any FAC info you want. recently the FAC's have started their own organization. the bronco people can put you in touch with them also, as many are one in the same.

Not to worry. It's a very elite and little-publicised unit.... ;)

I recall air support from mostly USAF and South Vietnamese Air Force, but then I recall one airstrike that was done by Navy Sky Hawks...but then again it could have been the Vietnamesie Navy?. What they were doing in the central highlands I don't know? Mike IPMS
