Maybe OT--alt.binaries

Hey All! I've seen from time to time where someone says they've left pictures on alt.binaries of something they have done. How does one find alt.binaries in general, and how does one find the specific alt.binaries that has the picture one wants to find?

All help will be graciously received, Jerry 47

It's alt.binaries.models.scale (sometimes referred to as a.b.m.s.)

In this case, that usually means that someone's posted some pictures to the newsgroup "alt.binaries.models.scale". Not all news servers carry the alt.binaries.(whatever) groups - they take up substantially more disk space than the discussion groups - so you might not be able to get at these posts. But check your server's list of available groups; you may be lucky and already have the group available to you.

Once you have access to the group, you might need some special software to make sense of the posts. (looks at your message headers) Yes, I suspect that you will - I don't think that Outlook Express handles "binary" posts very well. If you do have access to the alt.binaries.models.scale group, then websurf to and download and install whichever of the programs listed in that section that catches your fancy.

Hope this helps.

Jerry, Rob's right - OE sucks at handling binaries. I use XNews - I got it from

Yes, that is a correct address - I've just tested it and it works. This little program will handle just about any binary format you will ever throw at it - give it a go. It's faster than OE, too!
