Bu181 Bestmann
Bu181 Bestmann
James Garner and Donald Pleasance (sp?) appeared in the movie Great Escape, and flew a German Trainer. Single engine, low wing, side by side trainer with a large greenhouse canopy. Can anyone identify this aircraft? Thanks, Bruce
Ahh, not the ubiquitous Bf108 training aircraft ?
We had the film 'Von Ryan's Express' on tv last week and they were painted a spurious gloss desert camouflage, also equipped with underslung rockets, trying to stop the train.

I can't recall the designation, but it was a Bucker of some sort. Similar to the Bf-108, but has a fixed gear.

After the war, the German aircraft manufacturer Klemm did their take on the Bestmann. The Kl.108 (?) was the Bestmann with a different eninge. Faller did an HO scale of it during the 1950s or early 1960s.
that is not it, looked more like a piper cub. Mike G
Richard, It was the film "The Great Escape" Steve McQueen was in it also.....kept going into Solitary
Bruce, I thought it had a high wing? It did show a crank start on the side of the engine cowling. No, wait, did have low wing, remember it now, my bad, sorry. Mike G.
I know but those damned trainers show up every time, Bf109s being a bit on the thin side! ;-)
