NASM and Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles

I'd like to correct some inaccurate information about the NASM and the UHC is beginning to pile up on this newsgroup.

First, the MiG 21 is on display at UHC, next to an F-4S which had a MiG 21 kill over Vietnam as a F-4J. The He 219 fuselage will be on display even if the wings are not finished. Other complete aircraft will be moved in (J1N1, Do 335, etc), including those that do not need restoration (F-100 and others). This coming spring should see the Do 335, He 219 fuselage, etc. on the Hangar floor.

The restoration facility at UHC is in the $$$ raising stage, with money beginning to be pledged, as part of the overall $311 Mil cost of the facility. One donor has $3 Mil on the table as a challenge grant and, with the opening of the Center, funding should pick up.

EVERYTHING at Silver Hill will eventually be at UHC. Silver Hill will be turned over to other Smithsonian entities for other use. The "when" depends on the fund raising, construction of the restoration and archive buildings and how fast things can move. The engine display at UHC already contains some unique examples and the entire collection, including the Japanese WWII, will be there. The SH mission now is to prepare everything for display and transport to UHC and move to the restoration facility there in a couple of years.

Given the horrible state of storage, lack of space and limited access no one will miss the horrible SH facility, except some of the guys working there that will have a much longer commute.

The Hangar will eventually have 200 aircraft on display and will be rather "crowded" (looked at the complete collection display model in the Director's offices the other day), but spectacular. The entire "Flak Bait" will be prominently featured, not just the nose section, in original camouflage, along with many other famous birds. Things will be changing every six months so I urge everyone to visit often. Additionally, many of the galleries downtown, the "Flagship" as NASM calls it, will be changing and refurbished in the near future. The Wright Flyer gallery will be up for two years and well worth seeing for an eye-level of the original.

The UHC display lighting "boss" and a couple of knowledgeable volunteers will be working over the next few weeks to tweak the layout in order to remove 'in-your-face' hotspots at the best photo locations. The lighting really adds to the aircraft displays, especially when viewed from the upper walkways, but some problems exist for photographers. They will be working to reduce those as much as possible.

Finally, if you can't visit, check the NASM website frequently as there is a large effort to put artifact information in web available format.

Do you know if the security at new Dulles facility will be similar to the mall facility?

I just returned from viewing the Wright Flyer on the eye level display, but have decided that it would take a major event/display to ever get me back there again.

Good day, Francis Marion

Not really sure what you mean by "security". Were you doing something that attracted the attention of the security personnel?

Additional info.

Silver Hill has 26 aircraft and some engines ready to move to the Hazy Center. However, the main restoration push right now is on the space artifacts side. The new James S. McDonnell Space Hangar is the main effort now as it will be complete, with all 135 major artifacts installed, buy mid-summer or earlier. This will free up the main hangar floor area now occupied by the space stuff now at UHC.

Things will be changing every month!
