One more quck question...

Are there any real differences in the quality of different manufacture's kits? Does each company have a speciality (Revell - Cars, Tamiya - armor, etc. ) and what kits should I avoid?

thanks again

There are real differences...but I think the biggest factor is when the kit was designed and first made. Any Revell-Monogram kit from the 1970s onward will be very worthwhile--but those dating back from the 50s and 60s (examples: Revell's Gato-class submarines, Testors' ex-Hawk plane kits) could be real dogs.

Most companies diversify their subjects. I think Polar Lights is the only company that really specializes (fantasy/sci-fi material).

I tend to favor Italeri and Revell-Germany for aircraft models, ERTL for car models, and Bandai for s/f stuff (I'm a big Gundam fan). But I've also been modeling a very long time and keep an open mind about kits.
