Re: Bf-109 G-6/Trop

Does anyone know what color the dust filter on the front air intake is supposed to be?

From what I've seen, it appears to be an oil filled filter like the ones fitted to an older VW car. (If you can call them a car!!!)

Would probably have a "wire wool" element and a cutout holder to retain it in place. The holder in the VW is a drilled plate that has a series of holes and is painted black with the oil soaked wire showing through the holes. However the aircraft one may be held in by a wire cage which may be either bare metal with oil or grease covering it or painted before being fitted.

These filters would pick up dirt quickly on a windy day with a desert strip, but would also be a high maintanance item for ground crews. Retaining clips or screws would be worn and there may be oil drips and dirty hand or fingerprints around the unit where the mechanics have handled it.

It wouldn't be a modern foam filter like a motorbike!

Hope this helps, Peter
