Not my thoughts on the camo issue, but here is what was written in "Navy Attack" by Francillon and Lewis. "Wearing an experimetal camoflage, this A-4E from VA-155 has been freshly painted in preparation for deployment aboard the USS Constellation in May 1966. The fleet did not report favourably on the use of dark camouflages." In yet another book, "History of US Naval Air Power" Lawson. A picture of a camo'ed A-6A, states that "Dark camo paint was applied to CVW-11 aircraft in order to evaluate effectiveness in blending in dark jungle terrain" In the same book a picture shows 2 F-4G's from VF-114 aboard the Kitty Hawk, with experimental camo. Here is what was written regarding the camo. "At this time, the Navy began to experiment in aircraft camo. Half of the aircraft on board the Kitty Hawk in CVW-11 were repainted dark camo. At the end of Kitty Hawks deployment the results were inconclusive. The green camo schemes were also evaluated by CVW-15 in Constellation and CVW-14 in Enterprise. Even though Air Force study resulted in a green camo for its tactical aircraft, the Navy retained gray aircraft with white underbellies for all its tac aircraft" Seeing that most aircraft today are "tactical gray" even the B-52's, A-10's, etc one most conclude that the Navy was right. ;)
