FWIW I believe the concept goes back to W.W.I and something called the Davis Gun. It was about a 6 pounder and was mounted experimentally on large flying boats by the U.S. and Britain as a weapon against U-Boats. Biggest drawback was that the backblast from the rear could take the flying boat's upper wing off if the gunner got careless.
