Are we being ripped off or is this normal pricing???

Hi, Just had a quote and I am staggered at the pricing, is this a rip off or normal.

HD Plasma Cut Rects 1230 mm x 252 mm x 6mm 316L =A379.31

That looks like US$4.25 per pound, which doesn't sound unreasonable to me. Over 20 years ago I was buying 316L in quantity; I think the price then was around $2.50/lb. Check the trend in the price of nickel and moly, two of 316's constituents, over the last several years.

Is this the price for the material or the cutting operation?

Stainless steel costs are outrageous these days. This pricing is accurate with labor. I only have one suggestion. We have been replacing most of our SS304 applications with lower nickel alloys, specifically an ultra lean duplex grade of 2101. This does change manufacturing processes. SS was great back when it was less than a dollar a pound but now it has become a burden to the cost of our products. The other options are coatings and plating=92s to achieve the same exterior result. iQ
