Helical Driven Pattern

I've been attempting to create a roller with holes in a helical pattern running along the length, think of a floor vacuum brush.

I've been using the curve driven pattern without any success. I know I can cut or extrude along a helical path, but I need to place holes along that helical path. A circular pattern which increments along length of the part for each hole feature would work.

I suppose I could figure this out manually and then pattern multiple patterns, but I was hoping for a simpler solution.

Thanks for any suggestions or tips.

2006 has a 3D curve driven pattern. I've used it and it works for things like this. Here's a sample part:

BTW, that was a great example. It has me thinking about how to use that concept to create other odd stuff. I'm a structural (steel/shape) guy, curving stuff is cool but rare.
