Opening files from Windows Explorer

I usually find it easier to open files by double-clicking on them in Windows Explorer, rather than browsing for them from the app. In Solidworks this has a few drawbacks, one of which is that you don't get the options to open the file either lightweight or as view-only.

Is there any way round this? Can this sort of functionality be added to the RMB options?

That would be an excellent enhancement request.

Small tip: Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> General ->

Click items as follows -> Single click to open an item. This way you save huge amount of clicks per day...

I have my pc set up this way also. The only disadvantage I've seen is that if you do a file-save-as (for example) and you want to keep the same file name but save it to a different folder, if you hover over another file for more than a fraction of a second it substitutes this filename for the original one, and you then have to type it in again. If there's a way of stopping that particular behaviour I'd love to know.

I have also found using thumbnail view in explorer allows me to see real thumbnails when I want to without having the option set in SWX.

To answer your actual question, you could use a custom addin program that reacts to the file open event triggered by SolidWorks. I wouldn't reccomend going to that level though. You should evaluate why you find it easier to open from Windows Explorer and look into what can be done to make the process of opening through SolidWorks work better for you.
