Or sweep (especially if there's an edge somewhere parallel to the direction you want to "extrude" in- remember that the path can be miles away- it doesn't have to pass through a sketch vertex) If the edge you want to use as a path doesn't end at the sketch plane, open a (3D if easier) sketch, convert the edge to the sketch, then drag the endpoint of the "on edge" line to break the temporary relation, (works in 3D just as for a 2D sketch), and make the endpoint coincident with the sketch plane.
