Dremel drill stand.

Hi all,

this talk of Dremels has reminded me of a long standing problem with mine.

I bought my Dremel 10 or so years back - it works well and has plenty of life left in it, but, it seems they changed the model about the same time. As far as I can tell mine needs the older style drill stand where the table rises against the drill, rather than the current one where the drill moves down the column onto the drill table. Of course, when I bought it from SHS they were out of stock of the drill stand and I have been unable to locate one since. As there is no local stockist, I can't check whether my drill will fit the current stand, but the catalogue doesn't list mine as being suitable.

Does anyone know? Has anyone got one of the old style drill stands to sell?

Regards, Greg.P.

Same problem here!

The difference is in the shape of the drill at the chuck end, wh/ means that older models will _not_ fit the newer stands -- as I found out _after_ I had bought a new stand (shoulda read the box more carefully.) Considering the engineering "challenges" involved, I really don't see why they had to change that. Seems to be purely a styling change. At the very least, they could offer two collars for mounting the drills, so that _all_ models would fit.

Bah! Double Bah!

Thanks Wolf,

It's as I figured out from the catalogue leaflet - it would have been an expensive mistake buying from New Zealand! The newer drill stand looks less robust from the pictures - longer vertical shaft and probably more chances for movement! I don't feel like discarding a perfectly good drill just to replace it with a restyled model!

Even the older Dremel stands were not all that rigid. Nowadays, for the price of the stand, you can actually buy a dedicated stand alone bench top drill press.

I picked up a "tool shop" brand at Menard's for under $40 (I believe Harbor Freight offers the same one). I was amazed at how accurate it is for the price.

Agreed. I bought a Canadian Tire housebrand 8" drill press for $60 Can (-->

about $40US) on sale. No play in the shaft or chuck at all. Lovely.

But I have a useless Dremel stand, which cost me about $40 Can. Bah again!

I put my Dremel stand on a table at a show a few years ago asking $15......after thorough examination one guy said, "Will you take $12".......SOLD!

And I had very good luck dealing direct with Dremel.....I had a very old model 270 Moto-Tool that I actually dropped off the workbench. It cracked the case, and of course, wouldn't operate.

I wrote Dremel, they said send it to their repair department back in Wisconsin with a check for $25.00 to cover repairs and shipping it back to me.

About two weeks later, the box arrives from Dremel. With a brand new

395 Moto-Tool in it, and a letter explaining that the 270 was not repairable.

Now...what does this have to do with the drill press stands? I had an old one for the 270 -- which the 395 would not fit into. So, I called Dremel to order the adapter shown in their catalog....told them what happened with my old 270, and them sending the nice, new 396. They sent me the adapter pieces for FREE!!!!!!
