Horizon Mail Order Policy

Why would anyone "voluntarily" keep AOL when they have access to a much better system? Everyone I know that is on AOL wants to be on something else.

Maybe the AOL email address is printed on his business card?

Let's see, I happen to have his card right here....

Yep, guessed right. Maybe he'll change when he runs out of cards.

-------------- Same story with your example Dave. These aren't Horizon's servers. They belong to Shout.net. (the same company that I pointed out was hosting their other domain -- the secure website)

That would be a good reason to keep it.

What type of pricing increase on RTR have you got info about? I suspected there might be a increase once Horizon took over. I suspect the market will keep the increases in line. This in interesting that the mail order discount houses will still be in business. It appears to me that only the basement/trunk dealers will be out in the cold. I plan to order my stuff mainly from the mail order dealers so I doubt it will make much difference to me unless they really raise the prices. Thanks Marty Hall

OK, just to be 100% certain I did call my Horizon "informant" (actually one of the folks in charge of Data Systems) and asked specifically who maintained what, where, etc. She confirmed that they in fact maintain both websites mentioned as well as the Fastserve from the Champaign location. This includes the hardware (mainframe and servers) used as well. (Want me to get the type of hardware as well?). You can in fact connect with them via dial up or high speed internet connections. So unless you think I was "misled" (another conspiracy theory started here folks! ) by the folks at Horizon then they apparently do "understand the Internet" and have control of all Data Systems, servers, and websites in house. Actually they did get a good laugh out of having another Internet "fact" presented to them. So I guess if you can't believe this then you probably believe the worls is flat.

Marty,

From the information given me by my LHS(already a 'Horizon' dealer), this is what is happening. Walthers and other distributors have canceled all back orders for Athearn products that the LHS has. This makes sense as they will no longer be able to get the Athearn product. The upcoming 'Challenger' orders with Horizon were also canceled and a note from Horizon indicated that the should be re-ordered - at a new higher price. Nothing else has changed, as far as I can tell. If I got something wrong here, I am sure Dave has the correct answer....

Horizon has sent an Email to their dealers stating that there will be a $30.00 drop in the retail price of the new Athearn Genensis Challenger. The new retail price will be $569.98.

Trying to keep it well under the Lionel Challenger price of MSRP of $699.00. But the only real comparison is the quality of the product and street price!

Spoke with my LHS. Last week Tim Geddes(Athearn) was at Horizon and my LHS owner spoke to him. He asked about the Challenger, and was told that there was going to be another price change. It appears this is what he was talking about. Good to see competition drives pricing s decisions!

Probably not . I kept AOL only for my E-mail at $3.99 per month for 3 hours max. I use it about 2 minutes a day (AOL rounds up the 5 seconds it takes to do E-mail twice a day). Other than that AOL definitely sucks. Sure several boxes of Business cards have the AOL address on it is an incentive, but then so is a hundred folks, family, and many suppliers. Four bucks to maintain my mailing address seemed like an easier choice then to "re-educate" the "masses" to a new address. It was hard enough when I moved the store 9 miles to get folks to follow.

One new note is that the Athearn Challengers net cost by Horizon to retailers has dropped $30 from what was previously announced. My Horizon sales rep called to let me know what was going on (changes to how Athearn will be doing the electronics for DCC). My outstanding backorders have been price adjusted accordingly. Athearn items I received this week from Horizon have had some costs up slightly or down noticeably. No significant trends as yet. Better than 90% of my previous Athearn orders came in from Great Planes. The Horizon pricing has either matched or in most cases beaten what I paid for before.

Speaking of Horizon has anyone else heard the _rumor_ that Horizon has put some money into MTH?

Jon, I'd love to see your definition of what "put some money into" is.

After all, Horizon is as model railroad distributor. Sending money to MTH would be a regular part of business. I never heard that MTH is looking for investment captial.

(And there is certainly reason to be doubtful of your claim - you are the person who who told us that there is a plan in place to have people buy single shares of UP stock and make a big point of the licensing plan at the shareholders meeting, so your track record on _rumors_ is a little thin.)

I have read that Horizon tried purchasing other model railroad manufacturers (Atlas and Life-Like) in the past, but obviously they failed.

plan at the shareholders meeting,< I know a few people who have done that (purchase stock for the purpose of giving UP a bad time) and the meeting has not been held yet so we can't count that one out, yet! March, isn't it?
