PRSL in Ocean City, N.J.

Good Morning All,

I have vague memories of the last steam engines that ran to Ocean City, N.J. in the 50s. My grandfather had a home on Ocean Ave. between 3rd and 4th sts. I used to walk, as I remember, with my father or grandfather, down

4th st toward the bay for about 3 or 4 blocks to the tracks. Occasionally there would be and engine sitting there. I seem to remember the engine was usually a 4-4-2. Now......what I would like to know is about any engine turning and/or service facilities in Ocean City and their location. I know that the main passenger station was at 9th St. I seem to remember my father saying something about"engine facitilies" being up toward the north (Gardens) end of the island. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I will look at my PRSL and by rail to the boardwalk books. The amount of old train lines and stations etc south of Atlantic City is amazing.

I use to spend my summers in Ocean City also. I believe the steam engines were turned on a wye. I do not remember any engine facilities on the island. One of the engines often on the Ocean City run was the K-4 #460. Famous for the high speed fun from Washington to NYC with pictures of Lindburgh landing in Paris. As I recall the story the pictures were developed in a baggage car so they would be ready for the news media when the train arrived in NY. 460 was one of two engins I remember seeing in Ocean City. I'll have to look through my old pictures and see what the other engine number was. Budd cars were often seen on the island also.

Reb,

I thought the engine that pulled the train with the Lindberg pix was an Atlantic(4-4-2). But....I do appreciate your response, and anything more you can add will be appreciated.

I checked my Atlantic City Railway and By Rail to the Boardwalk books. No maps of OC in them! I gotta check the PRSL book when I find it. There is a system map of South Jersey and on it are three stations in OC (there are pictures of them) from the south way up to the north end of the island. There is also a picture of the first train in 1897!
