Ultra-sonic cleaning machine.

I find pure lacquer thinner best...then an ultra-sonic cleaning prior to primer and paint. Don't like lacquer? ...then mix up strong solution of household lye and soak disassembled loco, less drivers overnight. Rinse well and then the cleaner.

Don't use lye on zamac or other so-called pot-metal.

On brass, you can use just about anything you like. Plastic is trickier, you need to find something that strips the paint without eating the plastic. Brass is easy, you can use anything without worrying about the brass dissolving in it. I'd start with lacquer thinner, on the assumption that the factory finish is lacquer. If the finish defies lacquer thinner, move on to TSP, lysol, lye, high strength isopropyl alcohol, brake fluid, or paint store paint remover. Soak the car in the paint-remover-of-choice and finish up with a toothbrush and then hot soapy water to get the paint remover off.

Sand blasting by a pro. Otherwise you will ruin it.
