Can we help an Aussie.

An Australian friend is trying to identify this engine for his friend. It has 4 spoke flywheels and I cannot see any drive to the governor on the left hand side. It looks English to me but I cannot remember a name or see it in the A to Z of British Stationary Engines. I have posted the available pictures on my Picasa site.

Have you ever seen a engine like this? The valving is missing. It has a chain drive mag i guess. i don't think it had an ignitor. The fly wheels are about 16". Nobody that has looked at it can ID it. Can't even find where a tag might have been on it. Any help would be great. need to find a picture to to make those parts that are missing. George

It has something of a Leek (British Engineers & Electrical Co.) look about it - though I don't know if they made anything that big.

Hi Nick, Thanks for that. I had glanced at it but thought it too small but with your comment I looked further and it could be the No 5 1&1/2 HP with parts of the valves missing. Arnie Ferro got a picture of a smaller one. I will send the post below to the Ausie lad.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- British Engineers and Electrical Company Leek Staffordshire.

In 1905 a number of design changes were made after which a few changes occurred. A No 4 engine of 1 HP at 500 rpm was brought out In 1906 and followed by a No 5 of 1 ½ around 1911.

The British Engineers and Electrical Company supplied the majority of the engines in kit form to various companies and home engineers who undertook the machining and assembly

In such situations various modifications would be made to suit

various needs or applications.

It is these modifications that make identification so difficult!

Arnie Ferro took a picture of a small one at the 1000 engine rally.See

I had one of the smaller ones for a while. Apart from the bore and piston, which I imagine must have been finished at the factory, it was apallingly badly made and I don't suppose it ever ran.
