Ebay Bidding Changes - response from ebay

Following the discussion over the weekend, I had a reply from ebay overnight:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hello Peter,

Thank you for contacting us regarding the identity of the bidders is not shown. I apologise for the delay in responding.

To protect eBay members from threats such as fake Second Chance Offers, we have changed the way in which Bidder IDs are displayed on the Bid History and Item Listing pages on eBay.

Bidders' User IDs will no longer be displayed on certain listings. Instead, bidder numbers will be assigned in the order that a bidder placed their first bid. For example, if you are the second member to bid on a listing, your anonymous User ID will be "Bidder 2".

The bid history page will be anonymous once the high bid on an auction-style listing reaches a certain price. The price at which this happens varies by eBay site.

As part of this initiative, we're adding statistics for each bidder on a listing to help members feel confident in placing a bid. You'll see this additional information on listings where the User IDs of the bidders are anonymous.

We're confident these changes will further protect our members while maintaining transparency in the eBay marketplace.

Check our Announcement Board for more information on this and other features by copying this link into a new browser window:

I assure you that eBay takes shill bidding very seriously and we will investigate any reports we receive. The bidders' User IDs are visible to eBay.

Although individual bidders on a listing are identified by an alias (such as Bidder 1, Bidder 2) instead of their User ID, we will display some details about each bidder, including:

- how long the bidder has been registered with eBay

- the member's feedback star and positive feedback percentage

- how many bids the bidder has placed with unique sellers in the past 30 days

- how many bids the bidder has placed with this seller in the past 30 days (percentage)

We're confident these changes will help protect eBay members from threats such as fake Second Chance Offers while providing members with enough information about the bidders involved in an a listing to feel confident in placing a bid.

If you're concerned about a particular listing, please do let us know. Click "Contact Us" on any eBay Help page and select the following subjects:

Listing Policy Breaches > Fraudulent listings > Seller is using other accounts to inflate item price (shill bidding)

Peter, we know your time is valuable and we appreciate you taking a moment to express your concern to us. Thank you for helping to keep eBay a safe and reputable place to buy and sell.

Kind regards,

John Vaughan eBay Customer Support

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Peter
