Indian List clone Importing

I have decided to import some lister clones into the UK for people wishing to generate electricity from vegetable oil (or anything else for that matter - its just that this is my area of interest).

I have identified a reputable supplier (after many months searching and researching), and I have now started commercial negotiations. Even the very best of the Indian Manufacturers occasionally have quality issues, because many of the components are sourced from many other companies. Because of this, I have decided that the best way to avoid disappointment is if I provide a warranty/guarantee to UK customers. I will factor this into the commercial negotiations with the supplier. I will also import a complete range of spare parts should anyone need any.

In order to keep this project manageable, I want to keep the product range down to a minimum, so I have chosen the following engine specification which I could add to at a later date.

Engine Model Number: VOE-14 Number of Cylinders: 1 Power output: 14hp Speed: 1000rpm Bore x Stroke: 130.0 x 146.0 Total displacement (cc): 1937 Specific Fuel Consumption (g/Kwh): 268 Bearing type: TRB Piston material: Cast Iron Injection type: Indirect Camshaft gear & crank/idler gear material: Steel Lubrication system: Pumped

This engine also has a Crank shaft balance weight.

Standard accessories include:- Starting Handle, Oil Can, Screw Driver, Spanner set, flat pulley, foundation bolts and tool bag.

Optional items include:- Small Dynamo/alternator with sockets, different types of pulleys, base frame for different applications, water circulating pump, radiator, and self start.

I don't have a price for these yet, as the volume has a significant effect on negotiations, and that is something I don't have a feel for yet. These engines are far from the cheapest that India produces, but then, you wouldn't want anything close to the cheapest. For budgetary purposes, to get a basic configuration of this engine to your door, expect to pay £900 (+/- 30%). This will include warranty/guarantees. I am hoping that this price is an extreme over-estimate.

If anyone is interested in owning such an engine (and I'm not asking for any commitments at this stage), just drop me an email at j_mark snipped-for-privacy@hotmail.com (I don't want to fill-up this discussion forum with commercial stuff).

Didn't even notice the miskate, funny how the eye sometimes sees what you expect rather than what is actually there!

Anyway, to the point - ISTR that you originally experimented with a Chinese engine and, particularly as utterpower.com seems to favour the Changfa type (very loose Deutz copies), I wondered why you have eventually plumped for a listeroid?

Nick,

I don't think George (utterpower) prefers Changfas to Listeroids. Most of his web material (and certainly the CD that he sells) is focused on the Listeroids. I think he does have problems getting quality engines consistently. I think he has tried now almost all the leading manufacturers. My choice of engine has changed because the chinese are advancing their technology faster than the Indians, and this usually means that my application (running on vegetable oil) is harder to support. It is now impossible to get a chinese diesel with a cast iron piston, and very difficult to get one that it IDI. The Listers, on the other hand, are mostly IDI, Cast Iron Piston, and you can even adjust the Compression Ratio. So its really a supply line decision.

Thanks. No criticism you understand, I'm just interested in the whys and wherefores.

Have you considered that the imported engine maybe required to meet EU exhaust and noise emission requirements, certified that it does and be CE marked?

No, I haven't considered this. Along time ago I did find out that small stationary engines sisn't have very stringent (or any) ristrictions on noise and exhaust emissions.

Can anyone tell me where I can find any information on this?

Thanks

What irony! These wonderful, last a lifetime and more, slow diesel engines were manufactured in England up until about 20 years ago until their export market became to small to continue production. The Indians who already had bought thousands of these original Listers (and Petters) for years had been making spare parts for a long time but not complete engine castings. They immediately began manufacturing complete copies of this time proven engine to fill the need. Now someone living in England may be prevented by the English Government from obtaining one of these from the folks that were smart enough to carry the torch because of "regulations".

I can see where you fellas might not be particularly impressed.

My government in Can'tada works against it's own citizens in similar ways all the time.

I now have a more accurate (based on initial quotes and help from knowledgeable friends) estimate.

I was quite shocked to find out how many things need paying (and please let me know if you think I've forgotten something):-

Engine cost; Insurance premium for quality guarantee; Bank Charges; Shipping costs; Outward bound handling charges; Inward bound hanling and clearance; Import duty; Documents; VAT; UK transport

The grand total so far is £885 to your door step.

Now that is very close to my initial guess. It's also alot of engine for your money.
