OT. binaries on NG

I do not fully understand the workings of usenet, but I do know that there is no overall controlling body and its smooth running therefore depends to a large extent on individual users following the rules voluntarily. So, I really don't think it is a good idea to 'experiment' with binary files (pictures etc) on this text only group.

Sorry to come over all sanctimonious, but I for one would hate to lose this NG.

By all means come over to a.b.i.v-e I'm getting kind of lonely over there, cycling through my reposts ( it takes about four months at the moment ) but there are one or two others who would appreciate your photographic contributions.

Hi, None of the news servers I have access to provide a.b.v.e so I can't add it to Internal Fire at the moment. If I can get a feed then the IF site can be used to provide an archive.

Unfortunately, I also don't have access to that NG.

Just had a look, Easynet carries the whole alt.binaries hierarchy. Some of the groups look a little questionable to say the least, or maybe I'm just getting old... :-))

I know that NTL, Virgin & Freeserve all carry it.

You can get the group on NTL as long as you are retired & can get access in the daytime. After about 5 PM you just can't get on the group.

Sorry Paul, don't know where I dragged up the name Adrian from!

Anyway, looks like a.b.i.v-e would not be too useful for temporary illustrative purposes if it is not accessible to the whole group. Any other way such a service could be provided.

I may be missing something here as I am at the user level of being able to find my way about without bumping into things and changing the sparkplugs and oil.

However, I cannot for the life of me see why we might NEED to send each other binaries (or, as I understand it, photos in one file format or another) on this newsgroup as we all get along perfectly well telling each other where to go and look at our photos.

- or is there another, hidden reason that my higgorance is keeping from me?

I think it's for those who either don't want to use Webshots or similar sites, Kim.

It is quite convenient to be able to drop a picture to a known location without the hassle of having to set the site up, and some of them carry a lot of advertising which I personally find annoying/distracting, same with Yahoo Groups BTW.

For those who do want to have their own site, Oldengine.org continues to offer a free hosting place for anything engine related, and they also have steam stuff as well, plus Paul Evans has got his own site running now.

Also, most ISP's offer free hosting for your own pictures etc, up to

20mb of space at no charge.

Kind regards,

Peter

Webshots, Internal Fire galleries, individual's websites etc are great for albums of pictures which you want to keep, but I was thinking more of the quick snap to illustrate a "look at the wear on this Throgmorten giggling pin" type post. The sort of thing you would normally attach to an email and leave it up to the recipient whether they chose to save it or not. It would, I think, be a useful if one were able to 'broadcast', or at least make easily accessible on a temporary basis, such pictures to accompany NG posts.

No problem Frank.

I could always add a "Post-it" area to dump odd images to.

Adrian.

Sounds interesting Bert, tell us more.

Am I on my own here in thinking that this sort of facility might be useful?
