OT Briggs and Stratton disaster

I've had a bit of a disaster over the weekend and managed to destroy a vertical shaft B&S engine on a lawnmower.

All I did was rebuild it and put in new piston rings. It then proceeded to a) initially run smoothly b) start to vibrate a bit c) destroy much of its internals but neatly grinding up the counterbalance parts.

Just wondered if anyone has something suitable around they might want to part with? Needs to be 13HP or more.

TIA

. . .

That's a BIG lawnmower!

BugBear

It is for a walk behind but it's only mid range for a sit & ride.

John

Yes; I suppose I think of those as "lawn tractors" (perhaps wrongly)

BugBear

Hi,

Yes it is a sit and ride. Could do with a few more horses too.

Hi Mike,

The engine details are as follows:

Engine model 28T707, type 1121-B1, code 980114ZB

But I'm not sure I want to replace it with the exact same engine. I talked to my lawnmower man today (he used to fix Ferraris and other nice cars). He has rebuilt a couple of these engines before and had exactly the same results as me.

It seems to have a design flaw with the balance shaft.

Apparently all of the larger engines are the same mounting and crankshaft diameter - it's just the length of the shaft that varies.

It could do with a few more horses too.

So if you have something in the 15hp range that would be fantastic. Electric start preferable.

Thanks,

/Simon

You should try for something like the Kawasaki FC540V. It's a 17hp 535cc vertical engine with proper forced lubrication and spin-on oil filter. I have one on my Ransomes Bobcat. Kawasaki engines are an order of magnitude better than B&S I think.

Oh how things move on. My first car, an 850 Mini, had 20bhp (admittedly at the wheels). Now folks want almost that much on a lawnmower.

John

Yebbut did you ever have to cut long grass with the mini? I had one too and did accidentally off road it a couple of times, but found it didn't leave a very good finish on the lawn.

My poor thing did an awful lot of things a Mini was never meant for but mowing wasn't one of them. I tried trials but it didn't have enough power to get up the hill even when it had the grip. It just slowed and stalled.. I did rally it as much as possible though we were never really competetive obviously. The poor thing also towed our caravan and a variety of heavy trailers. A Landrover on a flatbed trailer made it struggle. The closest it got to mowing was when we were recceing a rally route and drove through some bonnet high grass. I got home and my mother refused to have the car on the drive. It was covered in greenfly. Happy days but I've still got the car.

I'm surprised it moved it at all!

When I did steam rallies, I used my 998 Clubman to tow a BIG trailer with an engine (and all the kit, including a wooden tool box which I've still got) and camping gear on and I don't recall ever having to be towed off a rally field. As long as I got a clear run, I was OK.

In my opinion, nothing has ever matched the 1922 Dennis/Blackburne engine fitted to the legendary Dennis Z Type mower. It has forced lubrication and an oil filter. Things go backwards as well as forwards!

I'm hoping to acquire a Z Type soon.

Best wishes,

Chris
