Pulleys

Anyone know where I can get a v-belt pulley to put on my engine to drive my pump:

I'd rather have a flat belt one as they look nicer, but I haven't seen any in my travels yet, so where should I be looking?!

Cheers lads :)

It's not necessary to have a V-belt one is it, i'm not going to have any major problems using a V belt on a flat belt pulley am I? Could convert the pump to a flat belt pulley I guess.

A V belt 'should' run up on to the crown of a flat belt pulley but its not something I've tried and could prove unstable in practice. Also power transmitting capacity will be very limited due to narrow contact area, particularly with a small engine pulley.

Machine Mart sell a variety of V pulleys. You can run a V belt on a "flat" pulley as it will ride on the crown. Trully flat pulleys may present problems with belts coming off. Are flywheels flat or crowned? I have never really noticed. If you run greater than 3:1 ratio, then you don't need a V for the larger pulley as there is sufficient contact on a flat pulley to equal the drive of the smaller V pulley. The figure of 3:1 was recognised some years ago, modern spec belts may have pushed it up a little.

The Lister domestic was originally designed for a 1/4 hp electric motor so a V belt running on a flat belt pulley will be just fine. In fact its the norm and, with a 5" dia pulley, roughly design speed. If driven off the flywheel the poor little thing will be a whirling dervish :-) Flat belt pulleys for Ds are usually abundant at jumbles/Rallies but sadly no longer cheap. ttfn
