What a great idea - one which I shall pinch at the first opportunity!

The gen set at the Museum with the 3 cyl 100HP Bellis and Morecombe prime mover. Was this engine also utilised in a marine capacity? Did B&M make engines with more pots than this? Anyway there is a vid of this gen set on Youtub. The sound of this engine stopping now plays when my PC shuts down. When it starts you hear a sound of a Bolinder semi-diesel.

You as well, I set up a new lap top for my father last year and replaced the nasty Micro$oft jingle with a Bolinder starting up. I usually have the speakers turned off on mine, so no point providing noises (or does a Bolinder count as poetry ?)

Most Bellis & Morcom series engines were built with up to 8 cylinders. Apart from early days, most marine use was as auxiliaries.

Did this engine come from the Amberley Working Museum? If so I was involved with the building of the enginehouse it was in. We were told it came from Portsmouth Dockyard. It never ran during the 5 years I was a museum volunteer but it looked impressive!

Yes Fred, it is the engine from Amberley. Had to have some fairly extensive frost damage welded when it arrived at IF before it could run again.

Perhaps I was applying a bit of poetic licence when I say I was involved with the building of the enginehouse. What actually happened was that by the time I became a volunteer the enginehouse was built and the Bellis and Morcom parked inside along with a large Robey oil engine that was installed properly and did run.

What our group did was clean and prime the "critall" windows. This took us 5 consecutive Sundays from 10.00am to sunset. January 1982 I think it was.

Then I think the money ran out as the glass was not fitted and there were no doors. This was the situation when I left 3 years later so it's possible that this is why the frost damage happened.

Certainly it was cold when we were working and we often had a tea break sitting on top of the B&M as it was just out of the wind that came through the open doors and windows!

I haven't been back to the Museum since, must save up for the entrance fee and have another look.

One thing's sure, I wish I was as fit today as I was then.

I must see if I've got any photos from that time. For those of you who never knew the pre-digital days photos were taken on film and taken to the local chemist for developing and printing.

My new ring tone is part of William Walton's Spitfire Prelude.

Great stuff, science!
