Scott piston.

Thought I'd have a peep inside the Scott SE, particularly in view of the fact that Phillip Gallimore's article said that it had seized at a rally and worn the gudgeon pin holes oval.

The evidence of the seizure was there for all to see and the gudgeon pin holes had been repaired with bushes, but more importantly the top ring stop was missing. The consequences of the end of a ring snagging in a port are at best a broken ring and more likely a wrecked piston and possibly damaged block.

I took the piston over to show to my father who immediately identified it as the same as a 600 longstroke flyer (motorcycle) item. Sadly he didn't have a spare (plenty of 500's) but pronounced it fit for further service "they all look like that after 25 yards!" if a new ring stop was fitted.

Again the spares box produced several the wrong size so, following the general pattern of one of these, I filed one up out of a scrap of bronze, tapped it into place and dressed it to height. The results can be seen on my webshots page (other stuff album).

Having tested the ring clearance, the engine is now reassembled and awaits only a mag sprocket and mounting platform to have a chance of being a runner.
