VM Diesels

One of the Hotel Peniche down here in the South of France has a VM Diesel engine lying in his garage. Its a 2 cylinder, Eng No 1052231895 and has a code of 25-J-1 marked on it. It also has a big (+20 KVA) alternator.

The chap has very little info on it other than it is early 1980s vintage.

Are they common ? or desirable ?

I think these are Italian, always confuse them with OM diesels.

If it's older than 1960's then worth restoring, if newer then handy as a genset.

Probably quite heavy though, got a trailer with you? :-))

They were taken over by Detroit Diesel and then that was taken over by Daimler-Chrysler. Was part of Finmeccanica was some years, Martin P's company will probably know more, being based in Italy.

If I remember correctly, LandRover used a VM diesel for a while.

Yep 2.4 4cyl in the first diesel Range Rovers, Turbocharged and intercooled version of that fitted to the diesel rover SD1 (don't see many of them now - only the V8!) Later (1989 on) 2.5 unit had a bit more power but still made for a slow and noisy drive. Replaced in 92 by the Landrover 200tdi then 300tdi / td5/ td6. The land rover engines are Direct injection, VM's not.

AFAIK Range Rover 2.4 serial numbers started 11A, 2.5's 95A no idea what numbers the diesel SD1's used, but I'm guessing this engine isn't one

Didn't the BMW diesel go in the 4 X 4's ?

You are right of course - the second generation RR had a BMW unit and the TD6 was the same engine as used in the X5. This has now been changed to the Jag Twin Turbo unit as used in the Disco 3

Vauxhall used that BMW diesel engine in the last of the Carltons and first of the Omegas.

Jag? pah, its bloody PSA- Ford / Jag / LR / Premier Automotive group cant make a decent Diesel to save their life, so get the French to do it for them!

(Volvo wont let Ford use the D5 at the moment)

True enough - funny there was a time when Volvos (petrol) were all french engined.

Anyway enough of this - it's not helping the chap with the VM genny :-) J

Volvos only used the Renault V6 engines IIRC, the 4's and inline 6's were their own? Peter

That's right Peter, the vee six B280 unit was a collaboration between Volvo, Renault & A.N. Other. They were pretty good units - though much maligned - & mine did 290,000+ before a split radiator boiled the engine & being an all ali lump, they don't take kindly to being bot & hothered ;o))

The in line fours & sixes were Volvo's own & show a continuous line of development. Good, long lived units

I am fairly certain that the Volvo 66 and 300 series of cars which were built in Holland during the 70's and early 80's were fitted with variants of the Renault R5/R12 4 cylinder engine.

What was the DAF versions were so fitted, as DAF sold the whole production line to Volvo so they could concentrate on trucks, but we don't call them 'real' Volvos :-))

That's right and the same engines (updated) were fitted to the Volvo 440 and 480 which were built in the Ex DAF factories.

The follow up S40 was built be NedCar (mitsuibishi) in the netherlands, and used the same platform, engine etc as the misubishi charisma

Oh and all the diesels except the latest in house unit were rebaged VW units. While we are at it the V8 for the XC90 is a yamaha unit.

While that is true, the prices that Volvo charged for spares and servicing for them were real enough. ;-)
