Nick, i'm not sure about the engine, but the crank has a certain Lister L type look about it.

It has been suggested off-list that it may be a compressor. Either way I guess next time we see it, it will be an engine with the 'missing bits' re-created and a four figure price tag!
Just been emailed a pic of the other side which does tend to suggest that it is an engine after-all. Not a bad buy if you don't mind a bit of hard work.
