Distorted running plates

Was a bit concerned about these on kit built loco after construction. However after looking at lots of pictures of G2's in Edward Talbots book it seems unless theyre kinky photos then there were lots of real distorted running plates around. Is this correct ?

Whether it's correct or not is partly irrelevant. When you build a model, you can put in as many prototypical dents and ripples as you like, and people will say "Gosh - that's a badly built model." :-)

Agree with you there, but am building it for me to my abilities. Always try to get it perfect then if it reaches a reasonable standard am happy. If I put in accidental warts but they match the real ones then quite content to leave as is. Do like the way some articles on construction explain how to get things perfect then they add the lived in look. Why not build it in ?

Not always.

Somebody (I forget who, but it was a well known modeller) built an armoured Simplex in O-gauge from a white metal kit, complete with dents and holes where it had rusted through.

I wasn't criticising your efforts, if that's what you thought I meant!

I think the theory is that the real thing started out perfect then deteriorated from there, so the model should do likewise. I don't agree with that theory :-)

Nope, didnt think you were - but you might if you saw them esp during construction.

the first precursur tank didnt stay perfect for very long - it derailed between erecting and paint shops.

Would still like to know what prototype running plates were like.
