The big ugly headcode thingies on the front of Western Region trains (Ok on engines pulling trains for the nit pickers ). Does anyone know when they came into use, specifically were they a GWR development or a BR one (reason for asking I'm considering filling them in on my "fantasy Western" project).

Shows how much I know, I was thinking of the 4 char alpha-numeric thingies didn't even know there was an earlier 3 digit scheme. David's very kindly set me straight.
