If using a Hornby R460 platform as an island, does anyone know what the distance between centres of the track either side should be?

I'd say best determined by trial and error, so as to avoid fouling of the platform edge by overhanging bits or your largest locos and rolling stock. Depends a lot on the location and severity of any curves on the approach tracks.
