There is a switch on the Hypertherm 600 to select cutting expanded metal. "From the manual : An active electronic pilot-arc controller helps maintain uninterrupted operation when cutting expanded metal or grating I do not see any difference between that and normal operation." The arc behaves the same. What difference will it make and how can I test it to make certain it works ?

It just makes your tips last longer.
If you notice when you reach the end of a cut sometimes the arc will go out before you shut it off. This can be annoying if you are cutting grates or expanded metal. When you move the switch to the left (expanded metal position) it keeps the pilot arc "on" when you reach a gap as you are cutting. The electrode and nozzle wear faster when you use the pilot arc as Ernie mentioned also. Jim
Guess I need to take it in for service. The arc still goes out at gaps.

Thanks for the replies. I found it actually does work. I read the manual again and it does not say the arc will stay on it says it re-initiates automatically in that positions. I tried it and it works.
