Old Max Arc Tig Set

Hi,

Does anyone have any knowledge about how to set up the tig unit, HF unit and Ac/DC converter on one of the old MAX ARC welder sets please

Thanks

Paddy

Are these the 2 separate add on units?, if so then I have both and the HF unit has the normal pre gas flow, post gas flow and HF time controls, as well as the continuous HF switch for AC. Much the same as any TIG welder with HF and gas controls. Both my add on units have Dinse sockets so I worked out a set of cables that allowed the AC/DC converter to be added in between the welder and HF unit or removed quickly when switching from AC to DC TIG or vice versa. One problem I did have with the HF unit was a slight time lag as the timer relays switched over which could lead to an interruption in the shielding gas glow, in the end I designed and built a timer PCB to replace the timer relays and all worked well.

I'll take some photos, but from your description I'd say yes. I'm missing the foot switch but I'm assuming a simple (single pole) replacement will suffice. I've an idea how to connect the various bits but any help you might have to confirm my thinking would help Regards Paddy

Yes it is a single pole switch, push to make, for the control. I used a torch switch with mine rather than a foot switch. I use a foot pedal now but that's with a Hitachi TIG unit with variable current control via the foot switch.

The little thought exercise with the leads was to come up with the minimum set that would allow the AC/DC converter to be swapped in and out between the welder and HF unit for TIG and also use the Pickhill welding set on it own for stick. I think I have most of the leads here at the moment so will have a look. Since getting the Hitachi TIG the MaxArc kit has been at a mates on permanent loan although I borrowed the AC/DC unit back recently along with most or all of the associated leads to run some hardfacing rods on DC.

Hopefully you should be able to see the 3 units via this link

I will drive these from a Pickhill set too

Paddy,

Those look like the units I have except I never had the supressor unit. The labels initially seem a bit confusing but after thinking about it for a few minutes I think what they're saying is if welding ally you want AC and wire the AC power through the supressor to the HF unit and don't use the AC/DC converter. If welding DC then wire the welder to the AC/DC converter then run the DC to the HF unit.

That was my interpretation too. Thanks for that Paddy

Guess I just have to hook it all up and give it a try!

Let us know how it goes. I found the set worked fairly well but it's nice now to be able to vary the current as you weld. What part of the UK are you in?.

AKA...also known as the "smoke check"

smoke I can deal with, the flash bangs are the issue. need to sort the gas out and I'm away!

David One other question HF earth connection, separate electrical connection to work piece? Thoughts?

Thanks Again Paddy

Paddy,

Yes, mine came with some ground wire and a crocodile clip to connect to the work. I did find that it wasn't always required, it has been a few years but IIRC it worked better on AC without the HF ground connected. Try and see what works best.
