Hi All.
I'm stumped. I'm relatively new to the welding game but have had some good success with my oxy/acetelyne torch. Here's the problem.
I have a piece of 1/2 thick steel plate (about 4 inches wide and 18 long). I'd like to weld a 3/16th inch thick piece of angle steel (2 x
2) to this plate. So, I get everthing nice and clean and fire up the torch using a #7 Harris tip (PSI for both tanks around 8). Then I start heating up the
1/2 inch material and that's where I stop. I can't get a puddle to form on the 1/2 inch no matter what I do. I've even used my cutting torch and still can't get a puddle to form. is this material simply too thick to build up enough heat to weld? Would it matter much if I went up to a #10 tip? Any ideas? Could I braze the angle to the plate? I'm not sure I can even get the plate hot enough to braze....If it's just a waste of time to do it this way, would you recommend TIG or STICK?
Thanks for your advice!
Rick
