We found non-prescription, non-bifocal safety reading glasses at our local welding supply house. They're available in all the standard diopter values.
I also found safety glasses bifocals with 0 correction for the 'distance' part and +2.0 for the 'reading' part.
I switch between both pairs depending on the task at hand.

There wont be any eye damage, UV is filtered in any lens used for welding. But it may give you spots.
I just welded up some shelf brackets and the hood I grabbed out of the cabinet hadnt been in sunlight for a month..the internal battery had run down and it didnt darken for the first 10 minutes of welding or so. Sigh..started darkening about the time I was doing the last couple welds.

You are correct! Unfortunately I don't have their catalog from a couple of years ago to see whether they're new or if I'm just blind (heh heh). Checking... no, the people I bought some bifocal glasses through (and discovered thereby that trying to use bifocals in the shop is impossible), safetyglassesusa.com, still don't seem to have them.
Ive purchased a modified bifocal reading safety glass out of Harbor Freight as well. The safety glass had a reasonable sized pair of magnifier lenses as part of the bottom of the of the lens. I do a fair amount of machining..often small parts and they do a very good job for that sort of viewing. I keep a couple pair in the truck.
My welding hoods at home in the shop, have the diopter adapters in them. They are cheap enough. Mig hood gets a very low diopter adapter, Tig gets a higher power adapter etc.

The problem isn't finding bifocal safety glasses -- that's easy. The problem is finding reading safety glasses that have the same correction across the entire lens. That's what I find much better for shop work, and what (until this morning) I'd never found a source for.

You can actually use a pair of reading glasses under a hood? What do you do when you stand up and reach for something or go and grab something from another bench?
Lift the hood, remove the glasses, grab, reinstall glasses, lower hood?

Yes, but only if you have your contact lenses properly installed.
That's what I do for a full day in the shop. And then I wear the necklace thing that holds my glasses around my neck while not in use. I have a bunch of them that I got at a yard sale like from the fifties with the rhinestone ends that go on your temples. Real cute, really. Different colors of rhinestones, too. Then that gets tangled with the ear plug loop. Or the bench grinder or band saw. Gets interesting, so you have to pace yourself.
On the upside, they pull right off if they get caught in anything. It can be a booger getting them out of the bench grinder once they get wrapped around there hard. Sometimes it throws a breaker.

I've got a lifetime of experience at being nearsighted -- my own vision takes a -4.5 correction with contact lenses; navigating with a piddling
1.5 diopter pair of safety glasses is no problem as long as what I need is vaguely near where I expect it to be. A few years from now as the diopters add up I probably won't be so smug...

The 75 watt reflector spots I have been using cost quite a bit, and they fail if they are bumped while lit, so I switched to a 500 watt quartz-halogen light. Well! That has a lot less tendency to trigger my helmet, and I can always control it by moving my head a little.
I wonder if metal halide lamps would be the best for lighting my welding bench? Have a look at the second diagram:
It shows the metal halides emit much less infrared than do fluorescent or tungsten lamps.
