Welding text book

After making repairs to a trailer some people in the local scout group became interesting in learning to weld and I was asked to teach some classes. The problem is I dont know where to start. I am a hobbist welder who just like taking care of his own jobs and I have probablly forgot at least half of what I ever knew. I figure I can guide some one thrugh a book and maybe learn/ relearn a few things along the way. What would be a good book to start out with. Primarily interested in stick welding be cause that is the type of welders I have.

There are a few free manuals available on the Net.

Here is the 774 page Army Manual

And here is the 194 page Navy manual

There are a few more good ones on that site

Just for fun, here is the Navy Underwater Welding manual

Gibson's "Practical Welding" UK book, should be available from the usual US suppliers though. Good hands-on style and it covers a useful range of techniques.

Miller has very good, very basic info on stick and mig welding available for free on the website (would be a great primer type handout) and Hobart has a great pocket guide pub that is full of useful stuff. (about $6.00) Forney also publishes a great manual for stick welding you can get at most hardware stores for about ten bones, kind of aimed at the farm-repair audience but is great basic info w/ clear illustrations.

The Jeffus book is fantastic, but can be hard to find. Try searching on Powells city of books (portland oregon) for a used copy...

Scouting rounds a guy out!

Good luck!
