Here's three:

Metal Fabricator's Handbook by Ron & Sue Fournier (HP Books) Fournier is a master race-car fabricator and the book covers the kind of welding and brazing used on cars.

Welder's Handbook by Richard Finch (HP Books) Good, basic coverage of torch and arc welding.

Welder/Fitters Guide by John P. Stewart This book was written as a text for industrial weldors (who already know basic welding) and has a lot of practical advice on how to avoid costly mistakes (the kind that get you fired). There are a lot of fitting techniques geared toward heavier stuff than most home shops will ever use, but the principals translate to smaller weldments.

Please note that the first two books have conflicting advice on some issues- you might want to try both methods and see which works best for you.

Oh, yeah- practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice.

The text provided for the vocational evening class at the local community college is the best one I can think of. Gerry :-)} London, Canada

Richard Finch's _Welder's Handbook_ is a good overall introduction to all types of welding, but add a local course at the JC or High School. "Hands-on" is your best bet.
