Well, the main point of a newsgroup is to post the answer for everyone. Take RCU, for example...I don't verify a posters email address there before I reply in a thread, why would I do it here? I'm not trying to be argumentative, but you're not the only one on this ng with that philosophy, I just wonder why?

You can help by replying to the group. I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone by not giving a valid email address. The reason I do so is to limit my address being picked up by SPAM spiders that harvest email addresses off newsgroups.

I figure that the whole idea for the newsgroup is for people to follow the threads of discussions for informational and also entertainment purposes. If find lots of information off previous newsgroup threads by searching through the various replies to questions.

Absolutely Mike, you nailed it. A litlle over a year ago, I had reached the point where I was getting AT LEAST 30 SPAM messages a day in my "private" email account. I finally had enough and since then have gone to great lengths to keep my private contact information off the net where it can be culled by spiders. I'm now down to only 1 or maybe two SPAMS a day and I'm going to keep it that way. Red S. has a business that is RC related so he HAS to offer contact information (they call it "advertising") if he wants to promote his business. I don't, so I don't; and if Red wants to pre-qualify someone by their having a valid email address to decide if he wants to respond to them, that's his business. It's also NONE of his business if I decide NOT to include a valid return email address so he is welcome to not give a rat's ass about my posts. This is a news "group" and as such, it is DESIGNED for messages and responses to be made to the "group" (if one is not sure what "group" means, pick up a dictionary once in a while). Including one's return address in a newsgroup setting is like hanging a sign on your back that says: "Spam me, I'm stupid".

I doubt more than a fraction of a percent of usenet's audience cares about or enforces e-mail. Those who do probably ARE old school. Or maybe they're new school and ran across such an outdated "official" primer - adopting a by-the- book attitude.

Actually it reminds me of the boastful little brat who, when finally cornered by the other kids, suddenly hears his mommy calling and has to run home! IOW it's a cop out to be used when one doesn't like the course a thread has taken.

That's too bad. In the 'old' days when using Pine or some other reader on a Unix system, requiring a valid email address made sense when Usenet was a closed community. It is much different today. With Usenet being wide open to address harvest bots, I wouldn't dream of posting my valid email address. Additionally, what is posted to a newsgroup stays there. I don't want some rabid poster 'following me home' by sending emails.
