I'm building some planes and using silkspan and Butyrate dope to cover. I need some thinner for the butyrate dope. What is a good alternative thinner I can buy at the hardware store. Need some sources for purchasing silkspan also.

Try a local airport for dope thinner. Nitrate and butyrate will thin with the same stuff. An alternative is to web order for SIG. I don't know anything in a typical hardware store that will properly thin dopes. There are several of the hareware store solvents that will successfully clean brushes, sprayers, etc.
Silkspan is a surf the web item. You may get lucky if you have a well stocked LHS.
You can use lacquer thinner in place of the dope thinner.
